Belisario Tower PDF Print E-mail

Real city's emblem is the cylindrical tower, improperly attributed to the Byzantine general Belisario, unique for the type of fortifications in the Marche region. It is 25 meter high to monitor the surrounding valley, and currently is characterized also for an emphasized slope. The date of its origin is wrapped in the mystery: if the current shapes do suggest the fourteenth and fifteenth century, the basement composed by stones mixed with rough concrete squares suggests the existence of a previous building. It was accessible through a small door situated very high; inside there are five rooms one on the other, which communicate with each other by hatches and retractable ladders. The top part has openings that allow to explore with the sight in every direction.

Porta Maggiore PDF Print E-mail

The castle of Cerreto, despite the numerous modifications, conserve the typical medieval structure: you enter by the beautiful Porta Maggiore said Giustinianea (XV sec.), classic tower-door with ogive arch, where on a column capital a curious sculpted siren can be noticed. Here begins the tour of defensive walls on which homes have been grafted during the centuries. The recent archaeological excavations in front of the entrance have allowed to discover again the ancient stone ramp that was used to overcome the gap of the moat that sorrounded the walls and to reach perpendicularly the entrance,  where a drawbridge allowed to enter the castle.
