Cupramontana offers a wide view to the mountains of the pre-Apennine ridge. In Roman times, near the location where today there is the cemetery, there was a municipality called Cupra Montana, probably because site of an important place of worship of Cupra, goddess of female fertility of pre-Roman origin and revered by Umbrians and Picenes. In the Middle Ages the city was rebuilt in a place not far under the name Massaccio (from "Massa Actii," that is "estate of Atto"). In 1861, like many other cities in the Marche region, took back the old Roman name. Today Cupramontana produces D.O.C. Verdicchio wine famous in the world, as well as an excellent oil.
