Romance’s ways
We are in a territory rich in architectonic evidences of the Middle Ages; these monuments are often located outside the main routes.
If already before the year one thousand parishes and monasteries were very spread, especially in the mountain area, after the year one thousand all the territory is full of important abbeys and churches that become a landmark not just only for the religious organization of the inhabitants, but also for the social one.
The spread of monasteries and abbeys was promoted by the presence of saints such as Romualdo, Silvestro (foundators of Camaldolesi and Silvestrini) and Pier Damiani, and of blessed such as  Antonio dal bastone, Gherardo from Serra de’ Conti, Alberto from Sassoferrato, Ugo degli Atti, Angelo da Massaccio, Paolo Giustiniani.
The route here proposed passes between mountains and hills and starts from the village of Sassoferrato, where there is the monumental church with the monastery of Santa Croce dei Conti, not far from the centre and in a dominant position on the right of the street towards Arcevia. Although adjusted in later times, also the church of San Francesco in the town centre conserved Romance’s elements.
• Abbazia di Santa Croce dei Conti (XII/XIII centuries)
• Chiesa di San Francesco (XIII/XIV centuries)

Going towards Arcevia through the main street, we arrive at a cross-road that leads to Genga and Grotte di Frasassi. Taken this direction, the road leads to the village of San Vittore delle Chiuse, where there is the homonymous church, probably the architectonic prototype of the church of Santa Croce dei Conti. It is placed on the top of a little hill around which there were the cemetery and the abbey; the last one it has been turned into the Speleopaleontologic and Archaeological Museum, but we can still see its evocative structures in white limestone.
• Abbazia di San Vittore delle Chiuse (XI/XIII centuries)
The village is evocative also because of the presence of the bridge over Sentino river and of the watchtower; moreover, down near the river you can visit the ancient mill, now turned into the Casa del Parco Naturale Regionale Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi.
Passed the gorge, you can take the highway towards Ancona and then leave it at Serra San Quirico. After passing near the village with its Copertelle, continuing  for a few kilometers towards Arcevia, you can see an arrow on the left that leads to the brushwood, where there is the church of Sant’Ansovino, at the foot of the castle of Avacelli.
• Chiesa di Sant’Ansovino (XI/XIII centuries)

Coming back from this oasis of peace and suggestion, we arrive at the village of Trivio and we take the road towards Mergo and Rosora. After a few kilometers, upward, half-covered by a farmhouse, there is the church of Santa Maria delle Stelle in the village of Serra San Quirico.
• Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Stelle (XIII century)

Now we go towards Mergo, we pass the castle and we go down the Vallesina again.
Crossed the railway we arrive in a few minutes at the church of Sant’Elena, that can be seen at a distance because of its massive dimensions.
•  Abbazia di Sant’Elena (XII-XIII centuries)

From Sant’Elena now we go towards Cupramontana, the last leg of our route, passing by the castle of Poggio Cupro. Close by the castle, immersed in the brushwood, there is the hermitage of Frati Bianchi that of the Romance period today conserves only some caves excavated in the sandstone, where the hermits sheltered.
Arrived at Cupramontana, we pass near the village and we take the road towards Staffolo. After a few kilometers we see on the left a little hill where stands, almost hidden, the abbey of Beato Angelo. With its structure in stone, the well conserved rooms, the internal cloister, it seems a place out of time, ideal set for a fiction about the Middle Ages.
• Abbazia del Beato Angelo (XII-XV centuries)
